USA. Holy Basil (Ocimum x africanum), Temperate Variety, Cut and Sifted, Certified Organic

Common names: Temperate Tulsi, Kapoor Holy Basil, Thai Lemon Basil, Hoary Basil, Hot Basil, Spice Basil

Family: Lamiaceae

This is a variety of Holy Basil first found growing in East Africa, and better adapted to cultivation in temperate climates than O. tenuflorum. One source states that Ocimum africanum is a natural hybrid formed by a cross of Ocimum americanum x Ocimum basilicum. Temperate Tulsi is closely related to other Tulsi strains, with similar actions, and a citrusy, spicy flavor. Key components include essential oils such as linalool, nerol, geraniol, citral, icocaryophyllene, and humulene.

In Ayurvedic medicine, Holy Basil is highly valued as a tonic and adaptogenic tea, an “elixir of life,” normalizing kapha and vata doshas. Traditional uses include bronchitis, rheumatism, fever, epilepsy, asthma, hiccups, coughs, skin diseases, infections and parasites, neuralgia and headaches, wounds, inflammation, gastric and hepatic disorders." Tulsi is also credited with giving luster to the complexion, sweetness to the voice and fostering beauty, intelligence, stamina and a calm emotional disposition.”

Published research on Basil species focuses mainly on the Indian varieties of Ocimum tenuflorum (Krishna, Amrita, Rama and Vana) and on European-type culinary Basil, O. basilicum.

Traditional uses in Ayurvedic medicine include stress, anxiety, heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, and dementia.
