Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) is in the Laminaceae family, which is also known as the “Mint Family” or aromatic family. There are many fragrant and culinary herbs in this family, including Peppermint, Spearmint, and Rosemary. This plant can be easily identified as its leaves when crushed, give off a distinctly lemon smell. It is completely edible and can be added fresh to salads, or used as a garnish.
Lemon Balm has been shown in clinical trials to have a specific action against the Herpes Simplex virus. It has come to be known as an antiviral, however the spectrum of its antiviral activity has yet to be established. The essential oil can be added to balms and creams to be applied topically to herpes sores.
This herb is reputed to help lift mood, and is used commonly in teas with herbs like, St John’s Wort, and other uplifting herbs.
